Boards and other substrates
A range of substrates made in a variety of materials and shapes, some of them with frames. MDF, plywood and tile-backer boards are all suitable for interior locations, but give careful thought to what material you choose for outside locations. Tile-backer board (developed for use in wet rooms) is completely waterproof and is the only substrate we recommend for outdoor mosaic. Mosaicists who are prepared to do a lot of work sealing and varnishing do occasionally use plywood boards outside but the surface may warp in cold and wet weather resulting in tile loss. And the sealing process does need to be repeated each year. All exterior mosaics on boards or moveable furniture (as opposed to a wall or floor) should be moved indoors in winter.
