New Course

Mosaic making at the Glass Furnace, in Turkey
Exploring surface, texture and colour.
This is a new course, at the international glass centre The Glass Furnace, in Turkey, near the Black Sea. The aim of the class is to teach students to respond to the nature of mosaic materials. Every mosaic material can be used in a number of different ways –for textural qualities and properties of colour, surface, or reflectivity. Wonderful results can be produced from a limited palette by extending the ways the material itself is used. We will be laying tesserae by the direct method. Every student should expect to complete a mosaic panel. In addition, small panels for experimental work will be provided. The course includes a day trip to Istanbul to visit some of the classic Byzantine mosaic sites.
